There was a man taking a morning walk on the beach. He saw that along with the morning tide came hundreds of starfish and when the tide receded, they were left behind and with the morning sunrays, they would die. The tide was fresh and the starfish were alive. The man took a few steps, picked one and threw it into the water. He did that repeatedly.
Right behind him there was another person who couldn’t understand what this man was doing. He caught up with him and asked, “What are you doing? There are hundreds of starfish. How many can you help? What difference does it make?”
This man did not reply, took two more steps, picked up another one, threw it into the water, and said, “It makes a difference to this one.”
What difference are we making? Big or small, it does not matter. If everyone made a small difference, we’d end up with a big difference, wouldn’t we?
In business and in life it’s the same, small differences add up to one big difference! Often we don’t know who we are walking right past and the difference they might make in our business.
In QBQ! “The Question Behind the Question,” a personal accountability training system, John G. Miller, the author and presenter shares an example of a lady who goes out of her way to better serve a customer who only purchased $2.50 worth of merchandise. The end result was the young man’s father, CEO of a major contracting firm, returned with him and shared with the lady because of the service she had rendered he was moving all his contracting needs to the Home Depot where she worked. The little difference she made turned in to a big difference for the Home Depot.
Time and time again it is the little things we all can do that make a big difference in the success of our business. In Leadership in Action and Solution Based Selling, the presenter, Steve Brown, shares the small and easy things we can do with our teams and customers that make a big difference to customer satisfaction and retention.
